Where the Studio Ends
Creation is rebuilding on borrowed rails, faster and smaller yet still bound to the systems it’s escaping.
Hollywood hasn’t lost its grip, but it can’t hold as tightly. The business that once scaled through scarcity now competes with abundance. For decades, control over distribution meant control over culture. Now the same tools that fragmented where audiences watch are starting to fragment who gets to create.
We’re in the in-between. The studio system still funds the biggest stories, but it no longer defines them. Around it, a growing constellation of small studios, creator collectives, and solo operators are proving that reach doesn’t require size and that creative control can outweigh capital. They build on borrowed infrastructure, rent their technology stacks, and trade prestige for proximity to their audiences.
Hollywood’s dominance hasn’t vanished, but it’s dissolving. What replaces it won’t look like the old hierarchy at all. The next era of entertainment is being assembled in real time, distributed, data-literate, and increasingly independent.
That shift raises a harder question: what does independence actually mean when the tools, platforms, and audiences all live somewhere else? To understand where creation is headed, you have to start with what broke first: distribution.
